Dual Instrument

Objectives

• Introduce instrument flight to the students

• Develop the ability to fly by sole reference to instruments

• Develop the ability to recover from unusual attitudes by reference to instruments

• Satisfy the requirements of 14 CFR 61.109(a)(3), which is three hours of instrument instruction

Session Details

These lessons are not intended to turn the student into an instrument rated pilot. The goal is to develop enough understanding of the instruments to allow the student to maintain safe flight in the event they stumble into instrument conditions.

It should be understood that night flight, which is legal VFR flight in the US, can very closely simulate instrument conditions. Additionally, night is a time when it is easy to inadvertently fly into clouds, which would have the student entering genuine instrument conditions.

For these reasons, it is important to have at least minimal facility with flight by reference to instruments.
