VOR/GPS Introduction

Objectives

  • Introduce VOR usage, and CDI interpretation

  • Show GPS basics, primarily Direct-To as an emergency measure

Session Details

This session will be complemented by a short whiteboard tutorial which will introduce VOR concepts and interpretation. Subsequent to that whiteboard session the flight session will take the concepts discussed and explore them in flight. This will include intercepting VOR radials, exploring the meaning of To/From on the CDI, and tracking courses defined by VOR radials. The distinctions between course, heading, and track will be emphasized.

Finally, the GPS will be introduced, and the concepts (and risks associated with) the Direct-To capability will be covered. GPS will not be used as a primary means of navigation during primary training, but the minimal usage should be understood in the event that the student gets irretrievably lost during a solo cross country flight.
